Popular Red Sea liveaboards including MY Typhoon, MY VIP One, MY Hyatt and Sweet Dream have been destroyed by fire while undergoing routine maintenance in dry dock in the Suez. No-one was injured in the 30 January blaze, which is believed to have started on MY Typhoon before spreading to other vessels in strong winds. Firefighters tried to control the fires during fierce winds caused by recent storms across the Red Sea, however, they were unable to rescue the four boats. In the morning of the last day of 2009 a container ship, run by Chinese Shipping Line, hit Woodhouse reef on the Straits of Tiran. The National Park closed Woodhouse for diving until the ship is off the reef. The CSCL Hamburg is a 260m long, 33m beam cargo ship licensed under the Cypriot flag. The total load of the ship is 424 40' containers and 71 20' containers. Coming from Aqaba the bow went 36m into the reef. Unconfirmed sources said that another cargo is on the way to unload the containers.

The people of Nuweiba have an additional reason to celebrate this New Year with the announcement today that the power station planned for the South Sinai region has been blocked. The European Investment Bank has declined a $320 million loan to finance the project amidst considerable pressure from environmental campaigners, investors and other stakeholders to properly consider the impact of its implementation on the local community, environment and tourism in the region. The new Technology Center to Serve the Citizens, next to the City Council, was opened on 22 March by HE the Governor of South Sinai Mr. Mohamed Hani Metwali. Also attending were the Minister of State for Administrative Development and the Minister of Sports. The center operated by the South Sinai Governerate will serve Sharm's community, especially also the foreign community. Currently the center is in a trial period. At approximately 16:30 hrs on 16th December Red Sea liveaboard, Emperor Fraser, was moored at Dunraven near Sharm el Sheikh. While the 11 guests on board, from the UK, Australia, Finland and Holland, were doing their second dive of the day the wind direction changed suddenly causing the rear mooring lines to break free. With divers underwater the captain was unable to start the engines in order to prevent the boat from colliding with the reef, causing a breach in the hull.
